A traditional women's market in Madinah where creative handicraft items made by productive families are exhibited.
This project is a favorite tourist destination attracting both the local population and tourists, since the historical nature of the place as one of the most famous markets in Madinah in the past stands out. The market contributes to preparing the Saudi craftsmen for the market and promoting handicrafts and products that reflect the originality and culture of Madinah society.
Suwaiqah Market is one of the most important old historical markets that were crowded with pedestrians and shoppers. It is located west of the Prophet’s Mosque, stretching all the way from Bab As-Salam to Al-Ghamamah Mosque.
The market was completely destroyed by a great fire in 1397 AH, terminating it altogether. Suwaiqah Market and Al-Ayniah Mills were inaugurated to simulate the old markets that had disappeared, integrating modernity and tradition with quality products and projects.
As part of empowering women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and creating jobs for them, this project was inaugurated by the Prince of Madinah, sponsored by the Social Development Bank, and supported and operated by Namaa Al Munawara Foundation.
The project aims to support the empowerment of women in the Saudi labor market through training and providing them with the trade opportunity as producers and/or salespersons. The market sells traditional handmade products.
The market allows Madinah young women to benefit from the market in two different fields; namely,
- The field of supply, which provides an opportunity for women manufacturers of products related to Madinah or to the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but who are unable to market their products themselves. So, they supply these products to Suwaiqah Market where they are showcased in privately-owned stores.
- The field of selling through which the market management turnkeys business opportunities for young ladies who wish to sell products related to the history of Madinah or the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in general.
Suwaiqah market is located in the Heritage Quarter, south of Madinah, in King Fahd Central Park.
The market is open to visitors Saturday through Thursday from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
